"E lucevan le stelle ed olezzava

la terra, e stridea l'uscio

dell'orto, e un passo sfiorava la rena.

Entrava ella, fragrante,

mi cadea fra le braccia."

(from "Tosca")

PRESS REPORTS:

"His top notes in particular were of extraordinary power and

brilliance...For sheer bravura, there were moments like the

phrase, "Gridai, vinto d'amor: T'amo," etc. from Andre Chenier's

improvisation, which Mr. Consiglio attacked with a portamento

worthy of Lauri-Volpi."

                                                            NEW YORK TIMES

"An italian tenor with spectacular top tones, recently arrived from

successes in South America and Italy...sporting a voice that at its best

reminded one of Giacomo Lauri-Volpi and frederick Jagel in their prime...

This is a voice of unusually strong and resonant quality...Mr. Consiglio

could always be counted on to scale whatever peak lay ahead and leave you

marveling at the ease and brilliance of the feat...In sheer size, Mr.

Consiglio's voice would probably outmatch any other you might name in the

tenorial major league. The spaciousness and power of the upper tones

were truly stupendous at times. And could he hold them!

                                                            NEW YORK WORLD TELEGRAM

"Giovanni Consiglio...gave an impression of a distinctly

Italian lyricism

natural and uninhibited;

and well focused, while his outspoken

top notes combined vigor with ringing brightness...

showed a command

his upper notes and the darker, warmer hue

of his lower tones gave his singing due contrast."

          NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE

"One of the greatest tenor ever to visit Cincinnati."

          CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

"He sang some of the best high notes heard

at the

 Academy of music all season."

WEEKEND CONCERT ROUNDUP

"With a minimum of fanfare, the Brooklyn opera

Company scooped its Manhattan neighbors by

opening its fall season with "Madama Butterfly"

last Saturday night at the Academy of music.

As sometimes happens there, a tentative beginning

 flowered into an absorbing performance,

in which Puccini's  intentions were the first

order of business.

Despite a cold, Elaine Malbin, looking fragile and

pretty, sang the title role with strength and

brilliance. Marija Kova was an outstanding Suzuki,

 rich-voiced and usually moving dramatically.

As Lt. Pinkerton Giovanni Consiglio showed what

it takes to make the Academy's rafters ring,

while Ercole Bertolino was a dignified, effective

 Sharpless.

A good word too for Robert Shmorr's subtle Goro.

From the pit, Carlo Moresco kept things moving

with practised hands.

A large audience, intent on every note, dispensed

 its liberal applause judiciously.

Seven operas will follow on successive Saturday

evenings, with "Aida" next. Go!"
