Gabriella Tucci
A young lyric soprano of the Metropolitan who, in a little over e decade, has rolles up innumerable successes with the greatest of ease. Born in Rome, she commenced her musical training under the adept guidance of the noted voice teacher Leonardo Filoni. He alone is responsible for developing Miss Tucci's great versatile voice, enabling her to handle coloratura, dramatic and lyric equally well. After three years of extensive and patient training she made her operatic debut in 1951 at Spoleto's Fames Teatro Nuovo, in "Forza del destino", as Leonora, opposite the celebrated tenor, Beniamino Gigli. Appearances in the Rome Opera House, the opening of Verona's summer season and acceptance at Milano's La Scala followed shortly after. Since she has toured all of Europe, the Far East, Australia and several big cities of the United States where in 1960 she made her Metropolitan debut as Madama Butterfly. This is one of her greatest roles though she performs quite adequately ad Aida, Mimi, Gilda and Elvira of "I Puritani". In Italy she is acclaimed as The Traviata of the day, having performes the role a record two hundred and seventy some times or more. She married her teacher, Maestro Filoni, in 1955 and in recent years, after each long and arduous season, divided between both sides of the Atlantic, they spend their summers relaxing with their young son, Fabio, at the Villa in Puglia (Italy).
